Early Explorers Grade One

  Hello everyone, Learning Goal:  Use the senses to make general and specific observations, and communicate observations orally and by producing captioned pictures. I first wanted to thank all of those who contributed and brought in something for the science experience.  The students were excited all week to do this.  The students had to use one or more of their senses of hearing, touch, and smell to predict what they thought the object was.  There was so much excitement that I forgot to take pictures of them doing it but below are pictures of them revealing their objects to the class.  This was a really fun expericment for all students.  I encourgae you to ask them what some of the objects were.  I'm sure they would love to tell you if they haven't already. I had a great time this week getting to know all of your little ones!

  Our week was another busy one filled with many learning opportunities. Our reading groups are continuing to develop and improve their reading skills. The decoding of unknown words was our focus along with the introduction of the silent “e” and what it does to the vowel… make it say it’s name. In Social we are planning our dream community. We will then map the community and create a 3D model. In Science we have investigated animals that hibernate in winter. We also looked at where they hibernate and how they prepare for hibernation. Basketball was our subject for Gym. We practiced dribbling, blocking and shooting before playing a game. The students really enjoyed this unit. Next week we start curling. In Math we continue to work with numbers 1 -100. Our knowledge of place values has improved and our next project will be subtraction of numbers 1-20.   We had another busy week in our grade 1 class.  Our structured reading program is a huge hit. Thanks to all parents for supporting this endeavour. The students love it when we share your comments with each other. They’re so proud that you’re so proud!!! In preparation for planning our “community” we have been discovering how to map. First we mapped our bedroom then our classroom. We learned that if you’re a fly on the ceiling looking down you basically see the top of objects unless they are laying on the floor, usually clothes or toys!! In Science we are researching winter animals that hibernate, migrate or adapt to our weather.  In Math we are continuing to solve math problems and expand our math language. We have started a reading comprehension project where we read a short passage then answer questions about the passage.   Happy New Year to you all. Everyone did a great job easing back into the routines of school after the break. Following is a breakdown of our learning this week. Math We are looking at the different language used in the process of solving a math problem. We are brainstorming how many ways we can say more, less and the same without compromising the answer. More .. greater, larger, in addition etc. Less .. fewest, fewer, least, lower etc. Same .. equal, twin, similar etc. Language Arts We have reassigned our groups in response to assessments carried out in December. During our literacy time all students read a book at their assigned level. We have also started to develop our understanding of the story read and to identify words that are challenging to decode. Hello Families, We enjoyed another fun week in Grade 1! Literacy * I can connect to a story. We read so many lovely books this week. Ask your child to share their favourite text we read and have them tell you the beginning, middle and ending. What was their favourite part? Did anything surprise them? Thank you to all of the families that have sent in Christmas books. As a class, we enjoyed reading them. Math This week we practiced solving open-ended word problems in a variety of ways. This week students were encouraged to expand upon the group-generated idea and include increased details in their picture.  Literacy success criteria included: 1) Drawing (with increased details) 2) Colouring (4 + colours and neatness) 3) Punctuation (sentences end with a period) 4) Printing (correct letter formation, letters sitting on the line, letters are appropriately sized) 5) Spacing (appropriate spaces between words) 6) Spelling (inventive spelling that the student can read to themselves, high-frequency words spelled correctly including like, the) Self-assessment drawing rubric: Math This week we reviewed many concepts in math.
