Hello Families,
We enjoyed another exciting week in Grade 1!

Literacy
* I can set learning goals for literacy.

Our journals this week focused on our classroom Elf.
Success criteria include:
1. Copying student-generated sentences (e.g. On the third day Candy Cane the Elf...)
2. Rereading the sentences
3. Creating a detailed picture that matched the writing
4. Illustration and writing were neat (letters on the line, etc).
5. Independent idea generation and a matching sentence.

* I can respond to texts and answer questions accurately.  Check out some of the books we read this week.

Social

* I can appreciate multiple points of view, languages, and cultures.
The excitement for the holiday season is growing by the day! We learned about how other countries around the world celebrate holidays, speak different languages, and engage in daily life. We learned about China, Italy and Australia.
Success criteria include:
1. I can share something new learned.
2. I can ask questions to deepen my understanding.

Math
* I can recognize quantities up to 10.

A ten-frame is a two-by-five rectangular frame into which counters are placed to demonstrate numbers less than or equal to 10. Counters can be arranged in different ways to represent different numbers, which visually helps your children develop a strong number sense. Ask your child to draw a ten frame and show their age.

Student Voice
* I can share my ideas in a large group.

"We liked playing outside together in the snow," -Casen
"We made Christmas art." -Adam
"This week we wrote about the Elf." -Jacob
"I learned that Christmas is celebrated in different ways." -Bruce
"We learned about adding numbers." -Ava

Maker Space
* I can use my imagination while working with my friends to create and design.
Wow! We love learning new things. Students explored a variety of centers:
1. Card making
2. Building
3. Green Screen
4. I-Pad Movies

Before beginning in the maker space, we reviewed perseverance and discussed our willingness to try new things despite tasks being challenging.

Classroom Update
-Please ensure your child brings their folder daily. Students are also encouraged to bring a home reading book home and return it the next day.
-Library book exchange is on Monday morning.
-If your child is going to be absent, please email the office to ensure the absence is recorded.
-Our weather changes drastically throughout the week. Please ensure your child comes to school dressed appropriately for the weather.

  • December 19th – dress in green (Grumpy Grinch Day)
  • December 20th – dress in your favourite festive funky hat/headwear
  • December 21st – dress in your favourite silly sweater
  • December 22nd – dress in your PJs and bring a stuffy

Have a wonderful weekend!
