Hello Families,

We enjoyed another fun week in Grade 1!

Literacy
* I can connect to a story.
We read so many lovely books this week. Ask your child to share their favourite text we read and have them tell you the beginning, middle and ending. What was their favourite part? Did anything surprise them? Thank you to all of the families that have sent in Christmas books. As a class, we enjoyed reading them.

Math
This week we practiced solving open-ended word problems in a variety of ways. Check out our toy and ornament problems below. 
Critical Thinking: represent numbers concretely, pictorially and symbolically 
Problem Solving: demonstrate counting strategies, develop a plan to use 11 wheels
Managing Information: use counting in at least two ways, to show the plan will work
Communication: apply reading, writing and mathematics as they interpret and solve a problem

* I can explain my understanding.
* I can use manipulatives or pictures to solve a problem.
* I can recheck my work for accuracy.




Student Voice
* I can share my ideas in a large group.

Art
* I can make drawings from direct observation.
We made Christmas cards for our Grade 4 buddy class. Check out our work below!

Maker Space
* I can work in a group to create and design.
We were so fortunate to enjoy the maker space twice this week! Before beginning in the maker space, we reviewed perseverance and discussed our willingness to try new things despite tasks being challenging. We created bookmarks for Calgary seniors to spread community spirit and joy!


Classroom Update
Grade One was full of excitement and cheer this week. Students enjoyed Grinch Day, funky festive day, silly sweater day and PJ day! I hope you and your family have a wonderful, restful holiday season. All the best, and see you in 2023!

Hello Families, We enjoyed another exciting week in Grade 1! Literacy * I can set learning goals for literacy. Our journals this week focused on Halloween. Students worked on giving each other feedback to improve their work. Success criteria included: 1. Copying student generated sentences (e.g. I am) 2. Rereading the sentences 3. Creating a detailed picture that matched the writing 4. Illustration and writing were neat (letters on the line etc).  Math * I can count on. This week we began exploring numbers. We read the story "The Napping House" and drew a picture of the people in our homes. We labeled them and identified how many feet are in our house. Ask your child to share how many feet are in their house (pets included).  Student Voice *I can talk with others about something recently learned. "I learned about finger spaces in my journal. We need them or you can't read our words."-Casen "This week I practiced spelling words with my eyes closed." -Ad

  Happy New Year to you all. Everyone did a great job easing back into the routines of school after the break. Following is a breakdown of our learning this week. Math We are looking at the different language used in the process of solving a math problem. We are brainstorming how many ways we can say more, less and the same without compromising the answer. More .. greater, larger, in addition etc. Less .. fewest, fewer, least, lower etc. Same .. equal, twin, similar etc. Language Arts We have reassigned our groups in response to assessments carried out in December. During our literacy time all students read a book at their assigned level. We have also started to develop our understanding of the story read and to identify words that are challenging to decode. In writing we are using a story prompt to continue to improve our writing. This week we have written about something we did during our break. We also brought something from home, shared it with our classmates then wrote about it.
