Hello Families,

We enjoyed another wonderful week of learning Grade 1.

Community
This week we focused on kindness and community. We became "Kindness Catchers."
Everly was initially selected for demonstrating strong leadership characteristics and for sharing her ideas around "The 7 Sacred Teachings" in the large group. Everly then caught Grayson being kind when she watched him help his peers and clean up without being asked. Grayson then caught Kayden who was being a kind friend while playing a math game. We can't wait to see who we catch spreading kindness next week!

Art
This week our watercolour portfolios included:
-M is for Monkey
-N is for Newt
-O is for Octopus
-P is for Panda
-Q is for Quail

We also read a story called, "A Colour of His Own." This story emphasized friendship, well-being and identity concepts. Students created chameleons from clay. This art exploration really emphasized fine motor skills. Thank you to our volunteers who supported this project (Jessica, Victoria, Jen, and Nicole). Your time is appreciated.

Leighton Center
On May 2nd we will be attending the Leighton Centre. Students will participate in a variety of art and nature related tasks. They will also have the opportunity to learn about Mr. and Mrs. Leighton who lived on this site, explore their home and see the art that they produced. All programs will be led by Leighton Art Centre Instructors.

Students will be required to bring a lunch, water bottle and a snack for the day. There are no facilities available to purchase food, so it is important for students to come prepared. Students will be expected to dress appropriately for the weather and be prepared to observe and engage in the outdoors. Students are encouraged to wear multiple layers, a hat and appropriate footwear for uneven terrain or muddy conditions. Students are asked to leave all electronic devices at home.

Gym
"Scoop Shoes" is based on the backyard game horseshoes.  Two hula hoops are at least five feet apart. Opposing players stand behind their hoop.  Each player takes turns tossing a ball into the opposing hoop. Students were encouraged to use the underhand throwing motion.  If the ball stops inside the hoop, the player is awarded two points. One point is awarded for a ball that stops less than a scoop length away from the hoop. Students use the scoop to measure the distance.

"Hooper Scooper" ... The goal of the game is to underhand toss beanbags into the opposing team’s hoops. If a beanbag lands inside a hoop, it can NOT be removed.  When the teacher calls “BASELINE!”, all students must race to their bench and take a seat. Totals are then counted.
*I can demonstrate a variety of object-manipulation skills.
*I can demonstrate practices that support fair play.

Science Maker Space (Ozobots)

-This week students began learning to program Robots! The learning intention of “Ozobots” is to build pathways and codes using colours. Students begin with simple lines and then transition to filling a path with codes. Students end by drawing lines and adding codes so their robot can visit specific locations on a school map.

Skills include:

*I can program using colours, problem solving, engage in error analysis, share, turn take and explain my thinking.

Around Sibbald
We love school spirit! Thank you to our fabulous Grade 6 students for organizing the "Gaga Ball" fundraiser. Their goal was to raise $1000.00 that will go towards the cost.  For $1.00, students could purchase 1 ticket to guess the number of candies in the candy jars displayed at the office. Tickets were on sale all week at a scheduled time, and students could purchase as many tickets as they wanted. The student or students with closest estimation won the candy jars.

Have a wonderful weekend!
