Hello Families,

We enjoyed another week of learning Grade 1.

Classroom Updates

Next week students will be attending swimming lessons. The lessons are scheduled from Monday April 17th to Friday April 21st. Thank you to all of our volunteers. I really appreciate your time. Please note there has been confusion regarding signing up to volunteer. We ask that you please check with the office regarding your volunteer clearance. There are multiple steps involved in the process and Mrs. Dupuis can support you with this. If parents are attending they are asked to observe on the "observation deck", the pool asks parents to not go on the pool deck due to safety and overall number of people. Lessons will start at 9:00 am and finish at 9:45 am. The bus will be leaving the pool at approximately 10:15 am. Only volunteers registered through sign up genius will be riding the school bus with our classrooms due to a limited number of seats. We look forward to an exciting week!

-Have your child eat a large breakfast. We will be eating snack after swimming lessons have finished.
-Have your child come to school in their swimsuit under their clothing.
-Pack additional snacks daily.
-Bring a plastic bag to put a wet bathing suit in.
-Remember to pack dry underwear.
-Leave all jewelry at home.

During our literacy block students are using iPads to access an app called "Lalilo". Students would benefit from having a pair of headphones to plug into the iPad that they can leave at school in their book bins. If you could please send in a pair with your child that would be great. Please keep expensive headphones at home, inexpensive headphones (Dollar store) work just as well for our purposes.

Literacy
* I can set learning goals for literacy.
* I can generate ideas that can be expressed through messages.

We love to write! This week students were encouraged to expand upon their ideas and include increased detail in their picture and add descriptive vocabulary to their work. Students used a self-assessment rubric to ensure all task components were completed. Students also used a personal word wall to check their high frequency spelling words for accuracy.

Some of the writing prompts this week included:
-Under the sea..
-At the zoo...

Novel Study
Students are loving the "Wild Robot". Check out some of our work below.

Social Studies
Our Social Studies journals are filling with our great ideas and showcase a sense of pride in our work.
The entries this week included:

B is for Belong. * I can identify groups and communities that I belong to.
-Students identified various groups that they belong to (family, school, clubs, daycare etc).

C is for Change. * I can identify how I will change over time.
-Students created timelines of themselves (baby, teenager, adult).

D is for Decisions. * I can appreciate how my decisions might affect other people and how the decisions of others affect me.
-Students engaged in conversations related to problem solving and discussed strategies that they can apply when required.

E is for Environment. "I can care for the natural environment and contribute to the well-being of my community."
-Students shared a variety of ways to care for the Earth. We are getting prepared for "Earth Day".

Math
We continued our exploration of "Math Talks". This week we learned a new game called "Which One Doesn't Belong?" This game provides provoking puzzles for students. There are no answers provided as there are many different, correct ways of choosing which one doesn't belong. The emphasis is on sharing ideas and exploring different possibilities.

* I can gather data by sharing answers to questions.

Around Sibbald
Thank you to our fabulous Grade 4 students who hosted an engaging Minecraft sharing assembly. Students loved seeing their buddy and how hard they worked on their designs.

Art
This week our watercolour portfolios included:
-F is for Fish
-G is for Giraffe
-H is for Horse

Each day we learn about the animal we are drawing. Have your child share a fact they know about the above animals.
.
Have a wonderful weekend!
