Hello Families,
It is so nice to be back and see everyone again. We enjoyed another exciting week in Grade 1. I hope everyone has a wonderful Spring Break filled with rest, relaxation and sunshine!

Literacy
* I can set learning goals for literacy.
* I can identify messages that provide enjoyment.
* I can identify messages that are imaginary or real.

We love to write! This week students were encouraged to expand upon their ideas and include increased detail in their picture and add descriptive vocabulary to their work.

Literacy success criteria included:
1) Illustration (including increased details)
2) Colouring (4+ colours and neatness)
3) Punctuation (sentences end with a period)
4) Printing (correct letter formation, letters sitting on the line, letters are appropriately sized)
5) Spacing (appropriate spaces between words)
6) Spelling (inventive spelling that the student can read to themselves, high-frequency words spelled correctly)

Some of the writing prompts this week included:
-If I found a pot of gold I would...
-What is your favourite pet/animal and why?
-In the Spring...

Novel Study
On Monday morning a robot was in our classroom and she came bearing gifts! Her name is Roz and we began reading her book, "The Wild Robot"... we love making predictions! We have many learning tasks dedicated to Roz and this novel after the break.

Math
* I can express addition symbolically.
* I can express patterns in addition and recheck my work for accuracy.

This week we reviewed addition in math. Some of the word problems students explored this week are below. Have your child show you how they solved them.

We also explored a variety of number talks and played "Which Numbers Are Left?" and we solved "Magic Squares". Pictures are included below. Please have your child practice these at home.
Number Talks are short discussions (5-10 minutes) focused on mental math and computational strategies. They promote the importance of being flexible with numbers using a variety of strategies. All students are encouraged to share their mathematical thinking during number talks in a variety of ways.

Benefits include:
-Provides structured practice for mental math
-Promotes the value in using mental math to compute
-Engages students in mathematical thinking and questioning

Student Voice
*I can share my ideas in a large group.
Art
Something exciting is happening in our classroom! This week we began our watercolour portfolios. Students painted alligators, butterflies and dinosaurs. Check out the details and work below.

Health
Our anchor text this year is "Finding Muchness" by Kobi Yamada. Students have reflected on how we find muchness in our classroom and school community during the school year. This week we focused on the concepts of gratitude. The guiding prompt this week was, "I am grateful for my family."

Gym
Beep! Beep! In Gym, we played "Indy 500" where teams had to work together in relay to complete laps. We also played bench dodgeball, fun was had by all! Ask your child to share some of the rules of the new games.

Have a wonderful Spring Break!
