Learning goal:  I can make informed financial decision making that contributes to the well-being of individuals, groups and communities.

This week students completed a junior achievement program on financial literacy.  These was a total of five lessons where students learned about communities, needs vs wants, jobs within a community, goods and services and entrepreneurs.  These lessons were very rich in providing students with a sense of how communities are mapped out and what some members can do.  Students drew and wrote what their role is and how they can help out in the house.  They all did amazing on it!  Go through their bookelts with them and ask them to explain some of the content we went over.

Reminders:

Please have students wear pink on Monday as there will ben an assembly in the morning for part of our Pink Shirt Day celebrations.

Our Student Voice leadership group is having a bake sale/Candy Gram sale that will take place on Tuesday.  Student can purchase Candy Grams and baked goods.  All items are priced at $1 and students can purchase only two items.

Hello Families, We enjoyed another exciting week in Grade 1! Literacy * I can set learning goals for literacy. Our journals this week focused on Halloween. Students worked on giving each other feedback to improve their work. Success criteria included: 1. Copying student generated sentences (e.g. I am) 2. Rereading the sentences 3. Creating a detailed picture that matched the writing 4. Illustration and writing were neat (letters on the line etc).  Math * I can count on. This week we began exploring numbers. We read the story "The Napping House" and drew a picture of the people in our homes. We labeled them and identified how many feet are in our house. Ask your child to share how many feet are in their house (pets included).  Student Voice *I can talk with others about something recently learned. "I learned about finger spaces in my journal.   Happy New Year to you all. Everyone did a great job easing back into the routines of school after the break. Following is a breakdown of our learning this week. Math We are looking at the different language used in the process of solving a math problem. We are brainstorming how many ways we can say more, less and the same without compromising the answer. More .. greater, larger, in addition etc. Less .. fewest, fewer, least, lower etc. Same .. equal, twin, similar etc. Language Arts We have reassigned our groups in response to assessments carried out in December. During our literacy time all students read a book at their assigned level. We have also started to develop our understanding of the story read and to identify words that are challenging to decode.
