Hi Families,


Learning goal:  Demonstrate an understandig of addition of numbers with answers to 20 and their corresponding subtraction facts, concretely, pictorially and symbollically.

This week students started subtraction which they all did great on.  To help them learn this concept we used different manipulatives.  One activity we did was subtraction by squishing playdough.  They had board games and would land on a subtraction fact.  To answer they would set it up with play down on ten frames and smash the ones being taken away.  Once they got the answer they would cover it up on the board and the person to cover up the last answer wins the game.  This was a fun game that they participated in and all understood the concept.

Reminders:

Library on Monday, so please bring back any outstanding books.  If you have any outstanding books, you would have received a paper notice that student took home with the books highlighted.  If they have more than two outstanding books, they will not be allowed to sign out any new books.

Students have an assembly on Monday, March 6 at 10:00am in the gym.  All of you are invited and should have received invitiations that the students made this week.  Along with these invitations, students brought home their spring poen that they will be performing.  Students are expected to memorize the poem for the performance.  Please support them to keep practicing it to help with the assembly.  Hope to see everyone there!

Hello Families, We enjoyed another exciting week in Grade 1! Literacy * I can set learning goals for literacy. Our journals this week focused on Halloween. Students worked on giving each other feedback to improve their work. Success criteria included: 1. Copying student generated sentences (e.g. I am) 2. Rereading the sentences 3. Creating a detailed picture that matched the writing 4. Illustration and writing were neat (letters on the line etc).  Math * I can count on. This week we began exploring numbers. We read the story "The Napping House" and drew a picture of the people in our homes. We labeled them and identified how many feet are in our house.   Happy New Year to you all. Everyone did a great job easing back into the routines of school after the break. Following is a breakdown of our learning this week. Math We are looking at the different language used in the process of solving a math problem. We are brainstorming how many ways we can say more, less and the same without compromising the answer. More .. greater, larger, in addition etc. Less .. fewest, fewer, least, lower etc. Same .. equal, twin, similar etc. Language Arts We have reassigned our groups in response to assessments carried out in December. During our literacy time all students read a book at their assigned level. We have also started to develop our understanding of the story read and to identify words that are challenging to decode.
