Hello Families,
What an incredible week in Grade 1!

Literacy
* I can experiment with letters and sounds to create new words.
Each day we review letters of the alphabet. We sing songs, practice printing, and find things in the room that start with the letter of the day. Letters this week include L, M, N and, O. Have your child practice the alphabet song at home. Daily, students take books home to share with you. Please ensure these books are brought back so that they can take another. Have your child go on an alphabet scavenger hunt. Can they find objects at home to match every letter? Raz-Kids is another helpful literacy website to support your child's reading at home.

Social Studies
* I can appreciate multiple point of view, languages, cultures, experiences within my groups and communities.
At Andrew Sibbald School, we are committed to helping staff and students deepen their understanding of Indigenous cultures. Our school has made a commitment to acknowledging and supporting the TRC’s Calls to Action. Using the Wholistic Lifelong Learning Framework, we committed to the actions of building staff and student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect. We are committed to:
  • Building our collective understanding through story by connecting with Elders & Indigenous people and through the use of picture books.
  • Encouraging Wholistic teaching and learning to thrive while learning from the land in our learning grounds and nearby Fish Creek Park.
  • Creating a cultural space and documentation boards to honour the work and make public our commitment to truth and reconciliation.
In support of Orange Shirt Day, students and staff wore orange on Thursday and reflected on the importance of actions moving forward. We met outside on the west field for a land acknowledgment and to engage in singing a morning Cree song. See the link below:

All students at Andrew Sibbald also painted watercolour feathers to create a symbolic display that we are committed to honouring children and reconciliation.

Maker Space
* I can work cooperatively with others.
On Monday morning we began exploring the 'maker space' in our learning commons. Students engaged in a variety of stations where they built, designed and, tested their creative ideas. Ask your child about their favourite station.
