 Hi Families,

Learning Goal:  Several sentences can be written to expand on one idea.

The goal in students writing this week was to write using a beginning, middle and end.  We used a traffic light strategy to help make sure all compenents were included.  The green light is the topic sentence, the yellow is details and the red is the closing sentence.  This helped to try to get students to accomplish writing complete paragraphs.  They were doing spring writing about what they like to do during this time.  Ask them what they wrote about!

Reminders

Assembly on Monday @10:00 in the gym.  Please get students to practice and help set them up for success.  We look forward to seeing you if you are attending.

Conferences are Thursdy and Friday so please book in if you ar wanting to meet.  they are all 15 minute spots.

Hello Families, We enjoyed another exciting week in Grade 1! Literacy * I can set learning goals for literacy. Our journals this week focused on Halloween. Students worked on giving each other feedback to improve their work. Success criteria included: 1. Copying student generated sentences (e.g. I am) 2. Rereading the sentences 3. Creating a detailed picture that matched the writing 4. Illustration and writing were neat (letters on the line etc).  Math * I can count on. This week we began exploring numbers. We read the story "The Napping House" and drew a picture of the people in our homes. We labeled them and identified how many feet are in our house. Ask your child to share how many feet are in their house (pets included).  Student Voice *I can talk with others about something recently learned. "I learned about finger spaces in my journal.   Happy New Year to you all. Everyone did a great job easing back into the routines of school after the break. Following is a breakdown of our learning this week. Math We are looking at the different language used in the process of solving a math problem. We are brainstorming how many ways we can say more, less and the same without compromising the answer. More .. greater, larger, in addition etc. Less .. fewest, fewer, least, lower etc. Same .. equal, twin, similar etc. Language Arts We have reassigned our groups in response to assessments carried out in December. During our literacy time all students read a book at their assigned level. We have also started to develop our understanding of the story read and to identify words that are challenging to decode.
