 Hello Families,

We enjoyed another fabulous week in Grade 1!

***Halloween at Andrew Sibbald School***

On Monday, October 31st, students are invited to dress in their costumes; however please leave ‘weapons’, scary/gory masks, and special props at home for trick-or-treating. Learning continues throughout the day and students will be playing outdoors at recess and lunch in their costumes. Thank you to our parents for organizing a Fun Snack ordering opportunity. Please do not send any treats for the class, as there will be no ‘class parties’ or food sharing. We look forward to engaging in STEM learning activities with Buddies throughout the afternoon! 

Literacy

* I can set learning goals for literacy.

Success criteria included:

1. Copying student generated sentences (e.g. I am)

2. Rereading the sentences

3. Creating a detailed picture that matched the writing

4. Illustration and writing were neat (letters on the line etc). 



* I can experiment with letters and sounds to create new words.

Each day we review letters of the alphabet. We sing songs, practice printing, and find things in the room that start with the letter of the day. Letters this week include X, Y and Z. Have your child practice the alphabet song at home. Daily, students take books home to share with you. Please ensure these books are brought back so that they can take another. Have your child see if they can recognize letters or words in their community (eg. STOP sign). Raz-Kids is another helpful literacy website to support your child's reading at home.


Physical Education (Gym)

* I can use equipment and follow rules in the gym safely.

This week we began volleyball. We started with beach balls to ensure we were hitting the balls safely. Ask your child to show you how to "serve".

* I can talk with others about something recently learned.

Maker Space

* I can use my imagination while working with my friends to create and design.

Hello Families, We enjoyed another exciting week in Grade 1! Literacy * I can set learning goals for literacy. Our journals this week focused on Halloween. Students worked on giving each other feedback to improve their work. Success criteria included: 1. Copying student generated sentences (e.g. I am) 2. Rereading the sentences 3. Creating a detailed picture that matched the writing 4. Illustration and writing were neat (letters on the line etc).  Math * I can count on. This week we began exploring numbers. We read the story "The Napping House" and drew a picture of the people in our homes. We labeled them and identified how many feet are in our house.   Happy New Year to you all. Everyone did a great job easing back into the routines of school after the break. Following is a breakdown of our learning this week. Math We are looking at the different language used in the process of solving a math problem. We are brainstorming how many ways we can say more, less and the same without compromising the answer. More .. greater, larger, in addition etc. Less .. fewest, fewer, least, lower etc. Same .. equal, twin, similar etc. Language Arts We have reassigned our groups in response to assessments carried out in December. During our literacy time all students read a book at their assigned level. We have also started to develop our understanding of the story read and to identify words that are challenging to decode.
